Codes of the West

Permanent Museum Installation

Codes of the West is a permanent interactive installation commissioned by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Their goal was to create an interactive experience that immerses viewers in the Old American West, while letting them explore the museum’s rich catalog of images and videos.

With the collaboration of Superfly, a design agency, I created a multi-state interactive system to power this installation: Hero images from the museum archive are dissolved by viewers into clouds of mosaic tiles, each also an image from the museum. Viewers additionally see themselves “transported” into the experience via a photo booth kiosk. Photo booth photos are recreated as mosaics on screen, inserting each viewer into the narrative of the Old West.
